Grundy County Historical Society is a vibrant, community-driven organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history and heritage of Grundy County, Tennessee, and the South Cumberland Plateau.

Located in Tracy City, the Society operates the Grundy County Heritage Center — a museum and research facility housed in the historic 1904 First National Bank Building at 465 Railroad Avenue, Tracy City, TN 37387. The Center features eight galleries exploring themes with local and national significance, including:
  • Native American history (Chickamauga/Cherokee)
  • The Swiss Colony settlement
  • Beersheba Springs resort era
  • Monteagle Sunday School Assembly (Chautauqua movement)
  • Highlander Folk School and its role in the Civil Rights movement
  • Origins of the New South through coal and iron industries (Tennessee Coal & Iron)
  • Geology, early settlement, and more

The on-site Tennessee Consolidated Coal Company Library & Research Center offers extensive resources for genealogy, family histories, census records, photographs, documents, and local research.

The Society hosts events, symposia (such as recent programs on Highlander Folk School), publishes books (including cemetery volumes), maintains an active Facebook page, and welcomes new members. Whether you’re a local tracing family roots, a visitor exploring plateau history, or a researcher, the Grundy County Historical Society offers engaging exhibits, warm hospitality, and a deeper connection to the stories that shaped this unique corner of Tennessee.

Perfect for history buffs, families, and anyone passing through the Marion County / Grundy County area — stop by and discover the heritage that lives on!
