Mr. Luther Kirk and the Shelton Family

Hemlock Falls LLC is more than just a venue—it’s a multi-generational dream realized by the Shelton family. The property’s story traces back to 1997 when Mason’s parents, Lynn and Jimmy Shelton, built their mountain home next to neighbor Luther Blackburn Kirk, a beloved retired teacher and WWII veteran.

The deep friendship between the Shelton Family and Mr. Kirk didn’t start out the best. It sadly started with a dispute over cutting down a tree; but, like most good Tennessee neighbors, they resolved their differences peacefully. And as with many neighbors, what eventually resulted was a cherished friendship; particularly between the Shelton children, Meghan and Mason, and Mr. Luther. It was so pleasant to hear Mason relay stories of a blissful childhood spent in the Marion County countryside, enjoying the natural surroundings of Hemlock Falls and forming a special bond with Mr. Luther. As he told the stories, you could feel the deep respect and admiration he held for Mr. Luther.

The Letter

In 2013, Meghan wrote a heartfelt letter to Mr. Luther expressing her love for the property and her hope to one day own the cabin. In 2014 after Mr. Luther passed away, Mason Shelton, who now manages the property along with his wife, Brittany, stated that the whole family was called to his attorney’s office. They really had no idea why or what to expect. As far as they knew, Mr. Luther’s plan after his passing was for the property to be gifted to the state (probably to be made part of the South Cumberland State Park). What they instead learned was that Mr. Luther was so touched by Meghan’s letter that he changed his estate plan to allow the Shelton Family to purchase his cabin and land. The funds from the purchase in turn would go to charities selected by Mr. Luther.

The Shelton Family was thrilled and purchased the property. Lynn and Jimmy poured years of love, labor, and vision into restoring the cabin—preserving its original 1950s hardwood floors and character while adding thoughtful updates and landscaping to highlight the panoramic views. What started as an Airbnb quickly evolved into a premier wedding and event venue after guests began spontaneously choosing the spot for ceremonies.

Generational Transfer

After more than a decade of building the business, Lynn and Jimmy entrusted daily operations to the next generation. For nearly four years now, Mason and Brittany Shelton have proudly managed Hemlock Falls, honoring the foundation laid by Mason’s parents while infusing it with their own energy, ideas, and commitment to excellence.

Brittany Shelton describes herself as the proud wife of Mason and a passionate steward of the family business. You may also recognize her name from her day job as Writer and Editor with the Marion County Tribune.

Mason exudes the implicit friendliness and kindness common amongst Marion County natives. But it doesn’t take long in a conversation to realize he’s also a very adept and capable entrepreneur and businessman.

Together, they form a dynamic team dedicated to creating meaningful experiences. Brittany handles much of the guest coordination and venue management, while Mason brings his hands-on approach to operations and maintenance. Their partnership reflects the same values that built Hemlock Falls: faith, adaptability, and putting people first.

Brittany shared that stepping into management brought a learning curve, but they’ve embraced challenges like balancing growth with preserving the property’s natural beauty, adapting to market changes, and ensuring every event feels personal and seamless. “Seeing the joy on a couple’s face on their wedding day reminds us why the hard work is worth it,” she notes. The couple is also looking ahead to future generations, including their niece Annalyn, who represents the next chapter in the family story.
