Good Google reviews are crucial for most local and service-based businesses because they directly influence visibility, trust, customer decisions, and revenue. Google dominates online reviews making its platform the primary place where potential customers research businesses. (wiserreview.com)
Google Reviews Build Instant Trust and Influence Buying Decisions
- High consumer reliance: 81-97% of consumers read online reviews before choosing a local business, with 63%+ specifically checking Google before visiting. Many treat reviews almost like personal recommendations.
- Star ratings stand out: Your average rating (e.g., 4.5+ stars) appears prominently in search results and your Google Business Profile. Higher ratings drive higher click-through rates. Low ratings or few reviews cause people to skip your listing.
They Boost Local Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Visibility.
Google uses reviews (quantity, quality, recency, and ratings) as a key ranking signal for the local pack (Map listings) and Maps results. More positive, recent reviews signal prominence and relevance, helping you outrank competitors. (brightlocal.com)
In other words, when someone searches for a business near them, or even when they simply search for one while allowing their location to be turned on, the order of the results seen are going to be greatly reliant on their volume of Google reviews. Businesses located in higher demographic regions get a boost from this. Because they’ve served more customers, they’ve received more reviews, and the volume of reviews give them a boost. This is why search results quite often prioritize businesses in Chattanooga, Murfreesboro, etc. even though we have capable businesses based in Marion County.
A Simple Example
Let’s suppose that with no prompting or solicitation, 1 out of 100 customers leave a review. If the big city business has 3x more customers than the rural business, this means that the big city business will get 3x the number of reviews that the rural business gets. This volume difference is big part of why our rural Marion County Businesses lose out in search engine recognition.
How Do We Combat This?
One way of combatting this is by having more of our customers provide a review. What if 5 out every 100 of our customers leave a review? Now, even though we don’t have the volume of customers the big city business has, we will appear more prominent in the eyes of the search engines because we have more reviews.
How do we do this? Our Marion County Businesses need to make it a practice of actively soliciting our customers for reviews. A part of this is the placards that MarionVibe.com has been distributing. They make it easy for your customer to get to your Google Review URL and instantly give you a review. The “Pay It Forward Friday” program where MarionVibe.com’s Facebook followers are urged to review a neighboring business is a part of this. We need to also go a step further and condition our populace to not only “Shop Local” but “Review Local”.
An idea that goes along with the above is to include your Google Review URL link in your Business Page Facebook Posts. All of your best friends and customers are a part of your following, but how many of them have given you a positive Google Review? Make it easy for them. If they’re seeing you on Facebook it means they are on their phone or computer; and chances are they’re looking at Facebook because they’re bored and have some time on their hands. What better time to ask them for a review and make it convenient for them to click a link that brings them directly to your Google Review page!
Along with this, MarionVibe.com can include your Google Review URL link in its directory. This can easily be done, but as the site administrator, I’ve debated this with myself (because I have no staff). What’s your feeling on this? Would you like for your Google Review URL to show up with your MarionVibe.com listing?
Of course, the concept of creating MarionVibe.com is to create a business directory which showcases and prioritizes our local businesses. If everyone searching for goods and services simply went to MarionVibe.com instead of Google, Bing, Yelp, etc., that would alleviate the SEO issue. Let’s do both 1) encourage our residents and visitors to use the MarionVibe.com Business Directory, and 2) improve our local business SEO rankings so those who do not will still find us.
Why so much focus on Google Reviews as Opposed to Other Reviews?
Simple, because it’s the one that has the most impact. The graphic below explains this succinctly. Additionally, when you consider Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews are used mainly for Dining, Lodging, and Entertainment decisions, the Google Review becomes even more dominant in the Review World.

What about Facebook and Social Media?
Everything helps and Social Media Marketing is important; so, keep posting and promoting your business on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.. Your followers will appreciate your posts and even recommend your business and this is helpful.
However, the social marketing sites are not search engines. It’s difficult, inefficient, and even frustrating for potential customers to find your business on these sites unless they know ahead of time that you exist and specifically search for you by name.
Another important factor to consider is that not everyone is an active user of social media sites. I know, it’s difficult for some who are social media addicts to comprehend, but for many people, social media is only looked at sparingly or not at all.
In short, Google reviews act as both a discovery tool (helping customers find you) and a persuasion tool (convincing them to choose you). Neglecting them means missing out on organic traffic and sales that competitors with stronger profiles capture.
